Let us consider a cross-section of a conductor through which a charge “dq” flows during the time ‘dt, then the rate of flow of this charge is called electric current.

Mathematically, electric current may be written as

Electric current = I = dq/dt

Since the charge is measured in Columb's and time in seconds, so the measure of electric current will be

I = dq/dt = C/s = Cs⁻¹

The C/s is called ampere.

Thus the electric current through a conductor will be one ampere if one coulomb of charge flows through it in one second.

One ampere = one coulomb/one second

1A =1C/1s

1A =1Cs⁻¹


Charge careers in metallic conductors are electrons, however, in electrolytic conductors, the charge careers are negative or positive ions and in the case of gases, the charge careers are electrons or ions.
